German Airport Security Alert Appears Linked to Failed Driving Practice

(MENAFN) A security scare at Leipzig Airport in eastern Germany over the weekend was apparently triggered by a failed driving practice session rather than an intentional breach, according to local reports on Monday.

Two men from Leipzig went to the police on Sunday evening with their lawyers and explained that they had been preparing for a driving test when they lost control of their vehicle and crashed through the airport's security fence.

Authorities discovered the damaged barrier at approximately 11 p.m. local time on Saturday, near three Russian Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft that have remained parked at the airport since 2022.

The planes have been grounded under European Union sanctions introduced following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war that year.

According to reports, a surveillance camera providing a 360-degree view of the area failed to capture the incident.

The damaged fence prompted an extensive police search on Saturday night, marking the airport's second significant security incident in less than three months.

In early August, investigators discovered a drone carrying explosives near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at the airport, which serves as a logistics center for aid deliveries to Ukraine. The device did not explode and was subsequently defused.

The German government said in September that Russia was responsible for the hybrid attack.
